Do processing speed and short-term storage exhaust the relation between working memory capacity and intelligence?

چکیده
The roles of processing speed (PS) and short-term storage (STM) for explaining the relationship between working memory capacity (WMC) and intelligence are analyzed at the latent variable level. 253 Chinese college students completed thirty-two measures from different content domains tapping the cognitive constructs of interest. The key findings showed that (a) PS accounts for the relationship between WMC and fluid intelligence, (b) STM and PS are required for explaining the correlation between crystallized intelligence and WMC. Therefore, this study provides support for the view that PS underlies the correlation between WMC and intelligence, yet with the nuance that its relevance decreases when cognitive tasks rely on crystallized knowledge and skill. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Relation between Working Memory Capacity and Auditory Stream Segregation in Children with Auditory Processing Disorder
Background: This study assessed the relationship between working memory capacity and auditory stream segregation by using the concurrent minimum audible angle in children with a diagnosed auditory processing disorder (APD).Methods: The participants in this cross-sectional, comparative study were 20 typically developing children and 15 children with a diagnosed APD (age, 9–11 years) according to...
متن کاملShort-term storage and mental speed account for the relationship between working memory and fluid intelligence.
Here, we explore the role of short-term storage, mental speed, processing efficiency, and controlled attention to account for the relationship between working memory and fluid intelligence. Ninety-six secondary school students were assessed by several tests and tasks to tap these psychological constructs. Specifically, each construct was measured by two tests or tasks from different content dom...
متن کاملWorking memory and fluid intelligence: capacity, attention control, and secondary memory retrieval.
Several theories have been put forth to explain the relation between working memory (WM) and gF. Unfortunately, no single factor has been shown to fully account for the relation between these two important constructs. In the current study we tested whether multiple factors (capacity, attention control, and secondary memory) would collectively account for the relation. A large number of particip...

Since an important role for working memory has been found in the first language acquisition (e.g., Daneman, 1991; Daneman & Green, 1986; Waters & Caplan, 1996), research on the role of working memory is emerging as an area of concern for second language acquisition (e.g., Atkins & Baddeley, 1998; Miyake & Freidman, 1998; Robinson, 1995, 2002, ...
متن کاملTHE EFFECTIVENESS OF COGNITIVE REHABILITATION ON PROCESSING SPEED, WORKING MEMORY CAPACITY, EXECUTIVE FUNCTION, AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS PATIENTS: A QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL STUDY
Background & Aims: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease that is the most common cause of disability and may be associated with cognitive impairment. Despite the implementation of cognitive rehabilitation (CR) studies in patients with MS, there are still no clear and conclusive results. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of CR on speed and WM capacity, executive funct...
